Who May Attend:
Massage Therapists
who have completed a recognized professional training program (or advanced students with approval). Other
professionals such as PT's, RN's, OT's, MD's, massage science
teachers and other health care providers may attend by permission of
the instructor and must show professional liability coverage.
Parents who would like to learn to massage their own children are
permitted to attend. **Massage therapists must show proof of a
personal liability policy to participate in the child clinic.

Course Description:
This is one
of the few courses in the country for students to learn to massage
children. Massage therapists, parents, and healthcare professionals
will learn to massage children of all ages. Children have different
physical, emotional and developmental needs from adults. Students
can anticipate learning to:

Massage and interact with children in
age appropriate ways

Use storytelling to connect with
children during massage

Ask permission to touch and help
children develop healthy boundaries

Explain massage to children in age
appropriate language

Work effectively with parents and
caregivers

Practice working directly with
children during the child clinic
Instructor Bio:
Shay Beider
is the founder and Executive Director of Integrative Touch for Kids,
a non-profit organization
dedicated
to bringing gentle massage to children with chronic, acute, and life
limiting illness.
(www.integrativetouch.org). In 2005, Shay formed Gentle Massage for
Children to teach massage therapists and other healthcare
professionals to massage children of all ages and abilities (www.massageforchildren.com).
Shay is the founder and co-creator of the Integrative Touch
Program at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles where she worked to create
an institutional pediatric massage program that can serve as a model
for hospitals around the country. She is the former Director of the
Infant and Children’s Program for The Heart Touch Project where she
collaborated with the Family Centered Care Committee and the Magik
Comfort and Pain Program at CHLA to bring compassionate touch to
hospitalized children. Shay has worked with TrinityKids
Care, the only dedicated pediatric hospice in Los Angeles, to
co-create a compassionate touch program for infants and children at
the end of life. She has been a Principal or Co-Investigator on
several massage research studies including two studies at Childrens
Hospital Los Angeles for hospitalized Rehabilitation patients and
medically complex infants in the Center for Newborn and Infant
Critical Care. Shay is currently an investigator on a massage study
at UCLA for children who have undergone heart surgery. She regularly
consults on massage studies nationally and internationally. As a
volunteer, Shay has massaged women seeking solace from domestic
violence and victims of torture and severe abuse. Shay completed her
Bachelors Degree in Women’s Studies and her Masters Degree in Public
Health at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2002,
Shay was awarded the Richard Ryder Award for
Dedicated and Passionate
Service. In 2003, she was awarded the Women’s Studies Achievement
Award at UCLA, and in 2005 she was awarded the Wilshire Foundation
Endowment in Geriatric Medicine and Long Term Care Award.
